Download Citra 3DS Emulator (Windows x64)
Citra is a remarkable Nintendo 3DS emulator project that has been in development since early 2013. It has made significant progress and can now emulate a wide range of homebrew applications and commercial games, although the level of success varies from title to title.
As an open-source project, Citra operates under the GPLv2 (or any later version) license. This open nature encourages collaboration and allows developers to continually improve the emulator. The name "Citra" is derived from "CTR," which is part of the model number of the original Nintendo 3DS.
Citra's capabilities continue to expand, with more games becoming playable as development progresses. However, some games and applications may not load at all, showing only a black screen, while others might display the title screen before freezing or crashing. The Game Compatibility List provides information on which games are compatible and to what extent. Users can contribute to improving this list by conducting tests and providing reviews.
It's worth noting that many games require specific files to be dumped from a 3DS console to function properly in Citra. Information on how to dump system archives, shared fonts, config savegames, and more can be found on the Citra website.
While Citra can run many games, users should expect some performance issues, including slow emulation and occasional gameplay and graphical glitches. If you're interested in 3DS emulation as an experiment or for development purposes, Citra is an excellent choice. However, if you simply want to play games, using an actual 3DS handheld might provide a smoother experience.
Citra offers two main versions:
Nightly Build: This version contains reviewed and tested features and is suitable for users who need support with installation, usage, or bug reporting. It's still in development, so crashes and bugs are to be expected.
Canary Build: The Canary build is similar to the nightly builds but includes additional features that are pending review before being incorporated into the official Citra builds. Support is not provided for issues specific to this version, and users encountering bugs are encouraged to retest on the nightly builds. Like the nightly build, the Canary build is also in development and may experience crashes and bugs.
